The Story of Forter Castle

Forter Castle has a dramatic history. Nestled in the rolling hills on the border of Angus and Perthshire in the Scottish Highlands, she stands as a striking testament to Scotland’s turbulent past and its ever enduring beauty. With its stone walls rising from the rugged landscape it has witnessed centuries of conflict and change, as well as a heartfelt restoration.

Originally built in 1560 by James Ogilvy, the 5th Lord of Airlie, its primary purpose was to serve as a fortification, protecting the clan's lands and overseeing the strategic mountain passes nearby. In the 17th century, hostilities between the Ogilvy and Argyll families escalated, culminating in Lord Argyll raising a force of five thousand men armed with heavy artillery. They marched on Forter Castle, which had mostly been evacuated, and set it ablaze.

The castle remained a ruin for 350 years with its stone walls scarred by fire and time. In 1988 Robert Pooley purchased the derelict estate, beginning the monumental task of restoring it to its former glory. The L-shaped castle’s entrance was blocked by three feet of debris, and two mature trees had taken root in its centre - the only inhabitants for over three centuries. Undeterred, the Pooley family set about reclaiming the historic structure, with daughter Katharine completing the extensive interiors, determined to honour its past while creating a liveable and comfortable home.
