There's nowhere quite like Scotland in the summer months. The glens turn a deeper green, the light lingers well into the evening and Forter Castle sits at the heart of it all. Forter is a private Highland retreat surrounded by some of the world's most dramatic scenery and here's how our guests love to spend their days.

For those who love a challenge, hillwalking is one of the best ways to experience the landscape around Forter Castle. A "Munro" is any Scottish mountain over 914 metres and there are 282 of them to tick off. They are named after Sir Hugh Munro, the mountaineer who catalogued them across the 19th century. Whether you're an experienced walker or tackling your first summit, the surrounding Angus Glens offer some of the finest routes in the country. There are excellent guides for beginners and seasoned walkers alike, browse walks available.
Few sights capture Scotland quite like a stag silhouetted against a heather-covered hillside at dusk. Forter Castle has easy access to several of Scotland's great sporting estates and Balmoral itself is only a short drive north via Braemar. With the Angus Glens on the doorstep, a guided wildlife safari, sporting outing or countryside walk can easily be arranged for guests during their stay - plenty of options for all discerning enthusiasts.

A Scottish summer calls for the right outfit and you can't go wrong with tweed and tartan. Campbell's of Beauly, a family-run outfitter trading since 1858, is the go-to for all things Highland dress from sporting tweeds to kilts fit for a ceilidh. The shop holds a Royal Warrant for tailoring and still operates from its original premises over five generations on. It's a wonderful stop for guests wanting to bring home a proper piece of this corner of the world.

The hills, the wildlife, the makers, the history - these are the threads that run through every Forter stay and all of it is within reach of your home. Seven bedrooms sleep up to sixteen spread across five storeys of a 16th-century keep: It's the kind of place that asks very little, so just turn up and let the glens do the rest.
